Angela Ciobanu – First Artist of the Kronenringe Residency 2025/26
Romanian jewellery artist Angela Ciobanu is the first participant in the Kronenringe – Jewellery Residency for Emerging Artists in Landsberg am Lech. She will open the program with her residency from December 2025 to February 2026.
Angela graduated from the University of Architecture and Urbanism “Ion Mincu”, then pursued an apprenticeship at David Sandu Jewellery Studio – both in her hometown, Bucharest. This dual background continues to shape her artistic approach today: versatile aesthetics, technical and formal precision, as well as experimental material research merge in her jewellery into a distinctive artistic expression.
Her career comprises several art residencies that enabled her to explore a wide range of techniques and to broaden her skills related to metal and porcelain. She has been an artist-in-residence at the Ilias Lalaounis Jewellery Museum in Athens, in the Finnish and Swedish Sámi regions, as well as in Portugal.
Over the past fifteen years, Angela has presented her creations in more than 40 international events, such as Collect London, Joya Barcelona, Venice Design Week, Indonesian Contemporary Art & Design, Vienna Jewellery Days, INHORGENTA Munich, Milano Design Week, Berlin Fashion Week or Romanian and Milano Jewellery Weeks. Her works have received multiple accolades and have been showcased in renowned cultural establishments, including MAK Museum for Applied Arts Vienna, Saatchi Gallery London or World Art Museum Beijing, underlining her contribution to contemporary jewellery art.
The objects that she creates push the traditional confines and question the notions of preciousness in jewellery and fashion, challenging the idea that a piece of jewellery should be just an adornment for the body. Mirroring her fascination with imperfections and surprising details placed in apparently conventional shapes, her work is the pursuit of a certain unexpected strength that lies in fragility and lightness.
During her Kronenringe Residency 2025/26 in Landsberg, Angela Ciobanu will develop a new body of work having as starting point the extensive, unfinished work left behind by Barbara Helleis. “Conversations with Barbara” is an experiment, as well as a note of appreciation – shaped in metal – for the artist whose legacy lies at the very heart of this residency. It is an attempt to honour her memory by engaging in a sensitive, artistic exchange with her own creativity.
